• Akt2orProteinKinaseBalpha(PKBalpha)isaserine/threoninekinasethatisamemberoftheAktfamily.Akt2liketheotherAktmembersisactivatedincellsinresponsetodiversestimulisuchashormones,growthfactorsandextracellularmatrixcomponentsandisinvolvedinglucosemetabolism,transcription,survival,cellproliferation,angiogenesis,andcellmotility(1).ThePI3Kgeneratesphosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate(PIP3),alipidsecondmessengeressentialforthetranslocationofAkt2totheplasmamembranewhereitisphosphorylatedandactivatedbyphosphoinositide-dependentkinase-1(PDK-1)(2)andphosphoinositide-dependentkinase-2.Akt1hasnumerouscellularsubstratesincludingproteins,whichpromotetheinhibitionofapoptosissuchastheForkheadtranscriptionfactorsandtheBcl-2familymemberBad(3).
